These Chocolate Covered Cherry Coke Floats taste like those yummy chocolate covered cherry candies!
Every summer growing up we would drive to Mammie’s house (my grandmother) to pick her up, and head a little ways north to visit her sister; my Great Aunt Gladys.
I loved going because I always loved listening to stories of my mother’s childhood and the tales of my family. I thought that the stories were so interesting considering my mother, who was a lot older than my friends’ mothers, being that she was born in 1941, grew up very different than others.
Her stories were full of life without tv. We would sit in the antique metal furniture on the front porch and they would recall how school was taught when my mother was a child.
In her early years, my Great Aunt Gladys taught her. It was a one room school house, and to hear them tell it, I couldn’t have ever imagined growing up like that. On the one hand, it sounded so amazing, but on the other hand, I thought that I would have never survived without TV and air conditioning!
Of course, visiting Great Aunt Gladys had other perks besides all those wonderful old tales. When we went inside, I always knew what was coming next, chocolate covered cherries. Yes, we would visit her in the summer and she would bring them out when we would come to visit. Those cherries are the perfect pop of sweetness!
Besides myself and my brother, we are all that is left from my mother's side of the family. So I hold memories like these near and dear to my heart. Everytime I see a box of chocolate covered cherries, I think of these summer visits.
I love to share things like this with my own kids since they never got the chance to meet Gladys, and Kelsie was too young to remember Mammie or my mother because they passed away when she was just a couple of years old.
However, both my girls know how I was introduced to that candy, because I recall stories every year when they hit the store shelves.
Summer is now upon us, and I had a craving for those chocolate covered cherries, but sadly they aren’t around at this time of the year. Nevertheless, I have come up with something that will remind you of that candy that you can enjoy during those months when it isn’t available, Chocolate Covered Cherry Floats!
