We love sugar cookies, but sometimes we want to top them with a little something extra.
Nothing quite sets a sugar cookie a part from the rest, like this frosting. I'm going to grab a sugar cookie with frosting over a naked cookie any day.
It's 4 ingredients and takes less than 5 minutes to make.
Don't wanna use vanilla extract?
No problem - you can sub the vanilla for almond, mint, vanilla, maple, orange, and lemon. Or any other extract to get the flavor that suites your cookie.
How do I get bold frosting colors?
I have found over the years to get the best colors to use gel food coloring, and not the liquid stuff.
I linked to the kit (above) that I love, because it contains a no taste red food coloring. This will help keep that funky artificial flavoring away.
Best sugar cookie base?
I suggest starting with a great recipe, like the one I have for No Chill Perfectly Shaped Sugar Cookies.
I also have a great Cinnamon Vanilla Bean Sugar Cookie that we use during Christmas time. And for you chocolate lovers, I have a Chocolate Cut Out Sugar Cookie recipe as well.
These can be frosted to look great with or without sprinkles. Plus, you don't have to wait for anything to "harden" before you start eating it!

This looks amazing! I'm going to have to go back and try your recipe for sugar cookies - I'm still trying to find a really good one! Flooding is hard for sure, you definitely need the exact right consistency, and sometimes you just don't have time for that! (Plus buttercream is so much tastier than royal icing!)
Joanna
You'll love this buttercream and the sugar cookies together. So tasty! Yea, flooding cookies is not for me. 😉 I'm more of a baker than a pastry chef!

Does the frosting harden? Ive been trying desperately to find a frosting that hardens and actually tastes good :b
Joanna
It does harden quite a bit. You can't actually sit cookies on top of the frosting because it will leave dents in the frosting. Does that make sense?
Bonnie Morgan
My eye went right to your pretty cookies for Valentine. Thanks for the recipe.
Joanna
Thank you so much Bonnie! Enjoy!
