Like most kids, when I was growing up I watched a lot of Disney movies. I remember when Beauty and the Beast came out and watching it a gazillion times, singing Be Our Guest with the candlestick, and hating Gaston. Then there was Aladdin and that song A Whole New World, still one of my favorite Disney songs of all time. The stories were magical, fun, exciting, and had great messages behind them.
Of course I was the kid who would watch the movie and say, “They need to do another one!” I’m not sure that a second movie would have even made me happy though, because looking at The Little Mermaid II, there still should be more, the story could continue forever as far as I’m concerned!! I always ask questions at the end, wondering what their lives would be like 10 years later, their kids, their extended family, etc.
When I first started seeing snippets of Cameron Boyce (from Jessie) on commercials, talking about being the son of Cruella de Vil, I was intrigued and couldn’t wait for more information to be released on the Descendants that he was speaking of. Finally the first commercial presented itself, and seeing children of the iconic characters that I grew up with was thrilling! I never thought about the villains having kids and lives after the movie, but life couldn’t have went on for just the good guys right?!
Last Friday night when the movie aired on The Disney Channel, we sat down as a whole family to enjoy it, after all we all know these movies and their characters. Even if my kids weren’t around when they first played out, they’ve seen them dozens of times because I believe that every kid should see all the Disney movies as part of their childhood.
This movie captivated us all from the very first song, Rotten to the Core, describing the lives of the Disney villain children, and kept us enchanted through until the end. This movie was by far one of my favorite Disney movies in a very long time and I really hope that there is more! I said as soon as it was over that they needed to make it a series. There is a whole lot of Disney kids floating around out there between all the princes and princesses and their villains. The story lines are endless.
If you missed watching Disney Descendants last Friday, or you saw it and loved it as much as we did, you can own it on DVD! We loved watching the bonus features. Seeing the bloopers were hilarious, and the “Facebook” comments gave a lot of information to use our imaginations (Is there going to be a festival in the next movie? Perhaps a Halloween version!), and watching them learn the moves to all the awesome song and dance numbers was great!
