Banana bread just got an upgrade with fresh plump blueberries and a touch of cinnamon! This Blueberry Banana Bread is perfect for breakfast and snack time!
We were at the grocery store several weeks ago and in the produce section they were handing out samples of berries. I knew that with Kelsie's food allergies that we would all be snacking on berries as we browsed the produce.
The blueberries were perfect. Sometimes you get some that are a little bit sour, but these were sweet as can be and calling out to be bought.
I grabbed several containers because I wanted to get them while they were all ripe and sweet. I had a few recipes in mind that I wanted to make, and I knew that we would be snacking on them by the handfuls.
I really wished that we had a place that we could pick blueberries at. Last year we lucked out and went blueberry picking at the beginning of June.
However, this year that same place said that there was too much rain, and the blueberries were no good. Bummer.
Fast forward to how this recipe came to be...Kelsie wanted some banana bread.
However, I had been slicing up the overripe bananas and freezing them for smoothies. I've been on a smoothie kick for lunch lately, and so I haven't had any just waiting for bread making.
I told her when we bought the blueberries that I would grab a couple of bananas that were just about ready for banana bread.
We came home, and within a day or so they were ready! I had about two cups of blueberries left over from my recipe making and I thought - hmmmm, I wonder if this would be any good.
One quick search on Pinterest proved to me that the idea exists all over. Haha. I tossed them in one of my favorite banana bread recipes and they were perfect!
Blueberry Banana Bread Ingredients:
- flour + baking soda + salt
- cinnamon
- sugar
- butter
- bananas
- eggs
- buttermilk
- vanilla extract
- blueberries
How do you make Blueberry Banana Bread?
- Mix together the flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon.
- Cream together the butter and sugar.
- Add the bananas, eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla extract.
- Add the flour mix, and mix on low until just combined. Do not over mix.
- Pour in the blueberries, and using a spatula, fold them in, being careful not to burst any.
- Pour into the prepared loaf pan. Bake.
Can I use frozen blueberries in banana bread?
Yes, the only thing is that your loaf may end up being purpleish in color, once it's baked. They will bleed out all over. It won't really affect the flavor though.
What can I add to Blueberry Banana Bread?
Leave out the cinnamon, and toss in some orange zest!
You could also add chopped nuts (walnuts, yum!!) or toasted coconut.
I bet some white chocolate chips would go perfect in this banana bread!
Can I freeze banana bread?
You sure can! Allow the bread to cool completely, then tightly wrap the whole loaf in plastic wrap, then place in a freezer safe bag and freeze for up to 2 months.
Thaw your bread at room temperature when you’re ready to eat.
You could also freeze individual slices! Just slice the loaf after it's completely cooled, and wrap each one up in some plastic wrap. Plop into a freezer safe bag, and pull out when you want a slice. Just thaw it at room temperature.
I love that this Blueberry Banana Bread is over flowing with fresh plump blueberries. I love how when they get warmed up, they sort of pop in the bread while baking! This is not only a tasty breakfast and snack, it's a good looking slice too!

Blueberry Banana Bread
Banana bread just got an upgrade with fresh plump blueberries and a touch of cinnamon! This Blueberry Banana Bread is perfect for breakfast and snack time!
Ingredients
- 2 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ¾ cup sugar
- 1 stick butter, room temperature
- 2 over ripe bananas
- 2 eggs, room temperature
- ⅓ cup buttermilk, room temperature
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups fresh blueberries
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line the center only of the muffin pan with parchment paper, and spray with non-stick cooking spray. I usually have the parchment paper overlapping the long sides. This helps with lifting the bread out, without it falling apart. Plus this makes it virtually non-stick, if you're using a glass loaf pan.
- Mix together the flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon. Set aside.
- In a mixing bowl attached to a stand mixer, with a paddle attachment; cream together the butter and sugar for two minutes.
- Add the bananas, eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla extract. Mix until combined. Pour in the flour mix, and mix on low until just combined. Do not over mix.
- Pour in the blueberries, and using a spatula, fold them in, being careful not to burst any.
- Pour into the prepared loaf pan. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes, or until a skewer (or knife) inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow to cool completely before removing from the loaf pan.
- Serve warm or out of the fridge!
