I have always been the type to buy frozen french fries because of the sheer convenience. Who else is with me? They are ready to go, whether it’s into the fryer or the oven.

However, one afternoon when I was getting dinner ready, I opened the freezer to grab my favorite frozen fries, and apparently I didn’t have any.
Maybe I miss planned when meal planning. Or perhaps I used them on a whim one night and made something off the weekly menu. Either way, we needed french fries.
I didn’t have time to go to the store before cooking, so I set a timer for 5 minutes, and had 6 potatoes peeled, sliced and on a foiled pan, seasoned and ready for the oven.
Once baked up, Kelsie said I should never buy french fries again, and that she would help peel if I wanted from now on!

First you have to know this – YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SOAK! It’s a total myth, in my honest opinion. The secret – dry them off! Wet fries create steam, and steam doesn’t allow for crunchy.
I also do not salt my french fries until they are out of the oven. In some vegetables salt draws the water out, and I just figured that it would do the same with potatoes. Is it true? Who knows! I’m not gonna find out.
Don’t overlap them when baking. Make sure to lay them out, not touching would even be better.
What are the best potatoes to use for oven baked french fries?
Russet or Idaho potatoes are going to be the best. They are high in starch, and that will lend the perfect texture.
Do I have to peel potatoes in order to make french fries?
That is a personal preference! You can peel, if you want – I do.
What is the best way to cut potatoes for oven baked french fries?
This is also a personal preference. We tend to like steak fries, so I cut them on the thicker side. You could totally do thinner, if shoestring is more your thing. Baking time will totally be decreased if cut thinner.
How do I reheat oven baked french fries?
Spread them in a single layer on a foil lined baking sheet. Bake in a 400 degree preheated oven for 5 to 10 minutes.
What can I serve french fries baked in the oven with?
- 6 medium russet potatoes - cleaned & sliced in to fry size
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- salt to taste
- Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Line a large baking sheet with foil & spray lightly with cooking spray.
- Place the sliced potatoes onto the baking sheet, and toss together with the olive oil, parm cheese and garlic powder.
- Spread out the potatoes and bake 12 minutes
- Remove from oven & turn fries over & return to oven for an additional 12 - 14 minutes, or until brown & crispy on the outside
- Remove & sprinkle salt. Serve immediately
